The honest answer to "what does a move cost?" is always a range, because no two homes pack into the same truck. But ranges are still useful for budgeting, so here are the numbers we quote against in Gujarat in 2026 — and, more importantly, what moves a quote toward the top or bottom of each range.
For a local move within the same city, a 1 RK or small 1 BHK typically lands between ₹4,500 and ₹12,000 all-in — labour, packing materials and transport. A 2 BHK usually runs ₹7,500 to ₹17,000, and a 3 BHK ₹11,500 to ₹22,000. Smaller towns tend to sit toward the lower end; Ahmedabad and Surat toward the upper end, mostly because of longer drive times and parking access rather than any 'big city premium'.
Interstate is where distance starts to dominate. A 1 BHK moving from Gujarat to a neighbouring state generally costs ₹11,000 to ₹32,000 depending on the distance band; a 3 BHK can range from ₹18,000 up to around ₹54,000 for the longest routes. The reason the spread is wide: an interstate truck is committed to your shipment for multiple days, so distance, route and volume all multiply together.
Four factors do most of the work in any quote. First, volume — the number of rooms matters less than how full they are; a sparse 3 BHK can cost less than a packed 2 BHK. Second, distance and route quality. Third, packing complexity — glassware, a large wardrobe that needs disassembly, or a piano each add labour hours and materials. Fourth, access: a fourth-floor walk-up without a lift, or a lane the truck can't enter (requiring a smaller shuttle vehicle), adds real cost that a phone-only estimate will miss.
That last point is why we insist on a pre-move survey — in person or over a video call — before giving a fixed price. A quote produced without seeing your home is a guess, and guesses get 'revised' on moving day. A surveyed quote can be fixed, in writing, with no loading-day surprises.
Watch out for quotes that look 30-40% below every other estimate you've received. In this industry that gap is rarely efficiency — it's usually a teaser price that grows after your goods are on the truck, when your negotiating position is weakest. A written, itemised, fixed quote is worth more than the cheapest number.
Things that genuinely reduce cost: declutter before the survey (volume you don't move is volume you don't pay for), move mid-week and mid-month when demand is lower, pack your own books and clothes if you're comfortable doing so, and be flexible by a day or two so your shipment can share an efficient route slot.
Add-ons to budget separately: transit insurance (a small percentage of declared value, and worth it on long routes), storage if your new home isn't ready, and vehicle transport if a car or bike is moving with you. A good quote lists each of these as its own line, not folded into a single mystery number.
